WBZ/CBS retained Bowdoin Construction Corp. as Construction
Manager to build this new high definition television transmission facility at
the base of one of it's 1,400 foot transmission towers. Pre-construction
responsibilities included working with the design team to assist in the
evaluation of potential building foot prints, value engineering of building
systems and materials as well as permitting and schedule items. The building
structure included a steel frame with masonry and metal panel walls. A
noteworthy feature of this project required the construction of a lightening
protection grid as well as a galvanized structural steel and mesh ice canopy to
protect the building from ice falling off of the tower. One of the challenges
Bowdoin overcame on this project was working on site directly below the tower,
which was being increased in height by approximately 120 feet. Careful
coordination was maintained throughout the project between Bowdoin's Safety
Coordinator, Project Superintendent, and the Contractor for the tower antenna
expansion. Bowdoin's hard-hat policy was strictly enforced for all workers and
visitors to this highly secure job site. |
