2000 Associated Builders & Contractors Excellence in Construction Eagle Award

Bowdoin Construction worked with the project team throughout design and managed the construction of this state-of-the-art school for autistic children. This newly completed specialty school includes twenty-one classrooms with video monitoring systems, a gymnasium, dining facilities, faculty offices, an occupational therapy room, time-out rooms and parent consultation rooms. One of the unique aspects of this project was the direct input from the autistic children and the counselors during design in order to appropriately address the sensitivities associated with autism. Classrooms were built with incandescent lighting rather than fluorescent lighting to eliminate the noise from ballasts, and soothing earth tone colors were applied to the walls to minimize distractions. The facility also includes extra wide corridors with color-coded floors, and skylights at every intersection to help keep students well oriented in the common areas of the building.
