Conversion of a former book
depository in Watertown, Massachusetts into a private school for
pre-kindergarten to sixth grade students. The project, designed by Maryann
Thompson Architects, consisted of selective demolition, the installation
of new windows and cedar clapboard siding, and the construction of new
classrooms, staff offices, arts/music room, library, an atrium and
reception areas. Construction was performed utilizing sustainable, natural
materials which were chosen to reduce contaminates and indoor pollution.
The building also reduces the use of energy by employing natural
daylighting, ventilation, carefully calibrated heating and lighting
systems, and waterless and low-flow bathroom fixtures. Extensive sitework
involved turning a paved parking lot into a combination play area and
school parking reducing the paved area by half, restoring grass and trees,
and utilizing natural drainage through an underground stormwater
infiltration system. |
